In addition to our regularly scheduled shopping trips, we took an afternoon to soak in the sunshine with the adorable and amazing animals at the Lincoln Park Zoo. The weather was beautiful, and the animals were out in full force, taking in some rays.
We got very lucky and arrived just in time to see the seal show! Watching the trainers feed the happy seals as they splashed around the rocks and ate fish was a real treat. We were even a little jealous that they were enjoying the water on such a warm day!
After that, it was off to see the big cats. They were all lounging around on the rocks, beautiful and powerful as they slept the afternoon away. Next, we visited the small animal house. It was a hoot! We saw the cutest little meerkats, naked mole rats, and tiny tarsiers, jumping tree to tree in the dark. Sharing the same house were snakes, lizards and toads of all types.
By the end of the trip we were all hot, tired, and ready for a nap. *grins*
Residents will need to rest up as we prepare for the next round of the activities planned for this summer. We are ready to take advantage of all the good weather the city has to offer!
As hard to believe as it seems now, in just a few weeks, spring will be upon us.
One of the most exciting things about spring at Greenview Place is that it brings Supportive Living Week! This is the special week set aside every year to celebrate and bring attention to the benefits of supportive living in Illinois. Now in its seventh year under the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition, the theme for this year’s festivities is It’s a Wonderful Life.
As part of our celebration here, Greenview will be hosting various activities the week of April 21 through the 25 with bowling tournaments, games, movie marathons and an open house celebration. As a part of the theme, we are collecting pictures of our residents from the past, to serve as our “then” pictures. We will also be doing makeovers, and taking “now” photos for a fun picture compilation. We think staff, residents, family and guests will get a kick out of seeing how the old and new pictures stack up!
If you have a family member here and wish to send us a picture for the project, we would love to include it. Maybe you have a fantastic wedding photo, or a picture from a special birthday celebration? Did your family take a vacation and someone snapped a great moment? Or perhaps you just have a favorite snapshot captured at home.
Any style is welcome, so long as it features a Greenview Place community member living a wonderful life! Pictures are requested by March tenth for inclusion in the project.
Let the memories begin.
Every Wednesday, as a part of our “Wellness Wednesdays” series, we will host an event designed to test our athletic prowess. Contestants will compete for weekly credits, and then at the end, we will tally the points to declare our gold, silver and bronze medal winners!
While the Winter Olympics include fifteen events, we have narrowed the field to just a few. Events are set to include tailored versions of shuffle board, bocce ball, bean bags, volleyball and walking.
Got an idea for an event that we should include in our Winter Games series? Maybe we’ll include it next year! Stay tuned for our progress updates.
As everyone in Chicago knows, we are in the thick of winter. The snow is falling and so are the temperatures. With the wind chill at a frosty -40 today, we are doing everything we can to stay cozy inside.
To start the day off right, residents warmed up with our daily exercise class. We listened to the Beach Boys and dreamed of the California sun while getting our bodies moving. By the end of class, we were fired up and ready for lunch.
In response to all this polar air, Greenview Place is combatting the chill with CHILI! Today’s menu was a great pick, the perfect meal for a cold winter day.
Residents enjoyed a showing of the Blake Edwards classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Everyone was toasty warm as we watched Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard while eating popcorn and chocolate covered raisins.
So, while it is blustery and cold outside, we’re making the best of it with lots of indoor activities.
Later this week, we will keep things burning with Wii bowling, and if that isn’t spicy enough for you, we will be salsa dancing too!
Throughout the year we’ve had many celebrations at Greenview Place. This year we celebrated our fourth !anniversary! as well as as our annual Luau, Dancing Under the Stars, and Senior Fair. We enjoyed visits from some of our favorite musicians like Stu Frank, The Chicago Arts Orchestra and Varieties. Other guests of honor for 2013 included Santa, the Abominable Snowman, the Easter Bunny, the UIC Pharmacy Department, and the students of Saint Luke Academy. We partied for Valentine’s Day, birthdays, Easter, Mother’s Day and the Fourth of July!
We have been busy, and we plan to keep the pace going in 2014. To celebrate New Year’s Eve, we are having a party – but it’s a little non-traditional. We will be hosting a Noon Year’s Eve party. Residents and staff can ring in the New Year with a pizza party and lunch on Tuesday, followed by a concert on New Year’s Day from singer and guitarist Randy Walker.
While the turn of the year is a time to remember the past and what has been, Greenview Place is looking forward to what the future holds. Wishing you a happy New Year and wonderful 2014!
